How to Subscribe to ChatGPT and Claude Code Without a Credit Card

Do you really need a credit card to subscribe to ChatGPT and Claude

Many people get stuck at the payment step when subscribing to ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro. Their card issuer is in a country the platforms do not support, their bank declines the charge, or they simply prefer not to use a credit card. There is a route that works without one: create a U.S. Apple Account, add balance with Apple Gift Cards, and complete the subscription inside the official iOS apps. The whole process never asks you to attach a bank card, and it works the same way for ChatGPT and Claude Code.

Why this route works

Both ChatGPT and Claude ship official iOS apps, and their subscription entry points run through App Store in-app purchases. Apple prioritizes your Apple Account balance when charging a subscription, and that balance comes from Gift Card redemption. As long as the account is U.S.-region and has enough balance, you can subscribe without a credit card.

Step 1: Create a U.S. Apple Account

The region must be set to the United States when you sign up, because it determines the top-up channels and the subscription price tier. Doing it on the web at appleid.apple.com is the easiest path.

1. Open appleid.apple.com and choose Create Your Apple Account.
2. Select United States as the country or region.
3. Fill in your name, birthday, email, and password. The email becomes your Apple ID.
4. Verify the email address.
5. For the payment method, choose None when the option is available. If the form forces a payment field, skip it for now and change it later in settings.
6. Enter a U.S. billing address in a sales-tax-free state such as Oregon, Delaware, or Montana. You can generate one with an address generator; the state and ZIP code should match.

Once the account is created, confirm that you can sign in to the App Store normally before moving to the top-up step.

Step 2: Buy and redeem a U.S. Apple Gift Card

Apple Gift Cards are region-locked, so you must buy the U.S. version and redeem it into a U.S. account.

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone and tap the avatar in the top-right corner.
2. Choose Redeem Gift Card or Code.
3. Enter the redemption code and the balance lands in your account.

Top up a little more than the first month’s subscription cost, because the automatic renewal draws from the same balance every month.

Step 3: Subscribe to ChatGPT and Claude with the balance

After the balance arrives, search for ChatGPT or Claude in the App Store, download the official app, sign in, and confirm the subscription from the in-app subscription page. Apple charges the Apple Account balance first, so no credit card is involved.

Claude’s subscription entry lives in the Claude app’s settings, where you pick the Pro or Max plan. ChatGPT’s entry is Upgrade to Plus in its settings. Once subscribed, log in to Claude Code with the same Claude account and you get the quota of the plan you picked.

Beyond payment, keep the environment consistent

Subscribing is only the first step. An account paid this way still needs a stable usage environment, or you may run into verification prompts and risk flags. A few points matter:

• Keep the Apple Account region, timezone, and language set to the United States. Do not switch them around.
• Do not put a non-U.S. SIM card in the iPhone, so the cellular data does not contradict the account region.
• If a subscription fails, do not retry repeatedly. Check the balance, region, subscription entry, and account status first.
